This pair of elderly lovers meets halfway everyday at the closed border between Germany and Denmark


In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the police has closed the border between Germany and Denmark. Every day since then, this pair of elderly lovers have been meeting halfway on both ends of the Mollehusjev border crossing to chat, joke and drink.

Karsten Tüchsen Hansen, an 89-year-old retired farmer, brings the chairs and schanpps from the north of Germany. Meanwhile, Inga Rasmussen, an 85-year-old former caterer, brings the coffee and table from the south of Denmark. Everyday at 3pm, they sit down on either side of the border for a picnic, keeping their love alive.

Since the two have been avoiding physical contact during their meetups, they looked for other ways to show their affection. Each day, Tüchsen brings Rasmussen a present. In return, Rasmussen brings biscuits, a cake, and sometimes even a cooked lunch.

“We’re here because of love. Love is the best thing in the world,” said Tüchsen to the New York Times.
