The drama began to unfold after Jamal Hinton from Chandler, Arizona, at the time 17-years-old, somehow ended up in the group chat of a text intended for family.

The text included two unknown numbers, along with the invite to Thanksgiving. A confused Hinton asked who they were, to which the sender replied;

“Your grandma.”

Two days after the initial conversation, the duo met up in person.

“She is a very sweet lady, she told me her husband was a veteran and she always invited his friends over for dinner, so she’s used to having a lot of people over,” the teen who was studying at Desert Vista High School explained. “I just got a vibe from her that made me feel at home.”

The teen then announced via social media that his family would be joining Wanda Dench’s to celebrate Thanksgiving and have dinner!

“I brought the pumpkin pie!” says Hinton afterwards to a local news station. “I honestly think we’ll hang out again. It’s the power of technology, you know? But for a good reason.

The story was brought back alight after Jamal Hinton made a new tweet, gaining over 250,000 retweets and likes within days.

It turns out last year was just the beggining! The Dench family and Hinton family spent their second thanksgiving together, keeping up the tradition.

Dench said to PEOPLE magazine: “It was really nice having everybody here.

“We got to laugh about last year and reminisce about how it all blew up on our phone and how I had to change my number. We had a laugh and a good time.”

We hope they keep up the tradition for years to come and continue inspiring other’s kindheartedness!
