Fungie the dolphin was feeling lonely during lockdown, so this fisherman kept him company

Fungie is a famous solitary dolphin living off the west Kerry coast since 1983. He routinely interacts with people on leisure craft and has adapted to the human company for years. Being a lover of people and attention from photographers, Fungie quickly became a tourist sensation.

However, due to the pandemic, all sorts of leisure activity came to a mandatory halt. Jimmy Flannery, a fisherman, noticed that Fungie wasn’t his normal self. “Fungie was lonely alright. He follows the commercial fishing boats out but they don’t have time for him. They are too busy heading to the fishing grounds,” said Flannery.

Jimmy then decided to take matters into his own hands. He now heads out of Dingle harbour twice a day to give Fungie a little company. The fisherman joked that he hoped Fungie appreciated the company, and doesn’t forget him when his admirers return once the lockdown is lifted.
