Ronald James Read was an American janitor, gas station attendant, philanthropist and investor who grew up in Dummerston, Vermont.
During his life time, Ronald Read demonstrated that anyone could make millions on a modest salary.
His wealth was unknown to everyone around him until he died at the age of 92 years. Thanks to smart spending and investing habits, he was able to accumulate an 8 million dollars fortune.
His family was incredibly surprised upon finding out about his hidden wealth. Phillip Brown (Read’s stepson) said “He was a hard worker, but I don’t think anybody had an idea that he was a multimillionaire.”
Read’s friends and family remember him driving a second-hand Toyota Yaris, using safety pins to hold his coat together and cutting his own firewood.
He also left a fortune of $4.8 million to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, where he went to on a regular basis, not for treatment but for breakfast. The hospital used the money to support infrastructure improvements and general modernization projects.
He died in June 2014 with his mark in the hearts of people and his legacy is still being sung till date in the town of Dummerston, Vermont and it’s environs.
